| DIFFERENT KINDS OF GOLF BALLS
The Golf game started using a leather-covered ball having goose-feathers stuffed into it. Then in 1848, “Gutta” ball was introduced. This was made with gutta-percha packing material. These Gutta balls performed well, highly durable and are of less cost. Hence these balls became popular and replaced the feather balls. Rubber balls replaced Gutta balls in 1898. The ball was made by winding rubber thread on a solid hard rubber center. In the early 1900’s, Balata cover was introduced. In 1908 the first standard golf ball, the type which is being used now, was invented. From structural point of view, golf balls can be divided into three types. One type consisting of a small solid rubber or liquid filled center covered by rubber threads and further covered by urethane cover. The second design combined a large solid center with two cover layers. The inner cover is one made up of a hard material and the outer cover is a soft one. The third variety is the balls with solid rubber center covered with durable Surlyn. Today’s balls have solid centers with multilayer covers.
