| Stymie
Stymie is an archaic rule in golf game. In Singles match if the ball of one player blocks the path of another player at a distance of more than 6 inches, then the blocked player is not allowed to lift his ball. Similarly if one player’s ball hit another’s ball into the cup, the knocked person’s hit is taken as holed out. The US Golf Association tried out the altered stymie rule in 1920 for a year which allowed the stymied player to confess the next putt of opponent. Stymie rule was later modified in 1938. It was during that time when the USGA started two-year trial, allowing a knocked ball within 6 inches of the hole to move without considering the space between the balls. Permanence of this rule was done in the year 1941 by USGA. Hence to date, the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews used this rule and never changed the set of laws. In 1952, the USGA and R&A made a set of rules and removed the stymie from the rules.
