| PAR IN GOLF
Par may be defined as ‘total number of strokes taken by a skilled golfer to complete the full play of a hole’. Simply, par is the number of shots required by a golfer to reach a hole. A hole may be classified on the basis of par. Consider a par-four hole. For this, a competent golfer is expected to reach the green in two strokes and put the ball in the hole in another two strokes. The first stroke must be from the tee and in the second stroke, it should reach the green. Then the ball must be rolled into the hole in next two hits for a par. This par-four hole is a standard one. Par-three and par-five are also common. But par-six and par-seven occur very rarely. The distance between tee and the green is a major factor in determining the par of a hole. For a standard par-four hole, the typical length ranges between 251 and 475 yards. The course slope is another factor that determines the par rating.
